IS 130-13 Chapter 12. Globalization, innovation, and 21st century organizational trends.
Nov 19th, 2009 by junkilee

This article is about the going green that is definitely nowadays trends. We can learn through the textbook that business industries try to innovate in everything and enhance the going green and social networks.

According to this article, one of the most important topics among business people is how to increase profits by being environmentally friendly. There are many ways to get this. At hotels, for example, by not washing towels during a guest’s stay unless the guest asks, the hotel saves both money and the environment. Green innovations can be featured in advertising campaigns to attract customers. Another potential benefit of “going green” is that it makes environmentally minded employees happy, increasing their loyalty to the firm.

This article explains the example that A Berlin brothel has hit on another way to use environmental arguments to its benefit: price discrimination. The bordellos in the capital of Germany, where prostitution is legal, have seen business suffer with the global financial crisis. Patrons have become more thrift and there are fewer potential customers coming to the city for business trips and conferences. But they have seen its business begin to return since it began offering the euro 5 discount in July.

To going green, there are lots methods to do that. First, we need to reduce energy consumption, or we can increase the recycling. Now the scientists try to develop more efficient and innovative energy sources and research the biology to help our lives. Also, government should regulate to conserve the nature.

It is very important to follow the global trends and we should be familiar with the potential of global business, including its many benefits and challenges. The order for students with training in global business is almost certain to grow as the number of businesses competing in global markets increases.

Chapter 11 Systems Development and Poroject management
Nov 12th, 2009 by junkilee

In this chapter, it explains about the managing project are categorized managing people, managing communications, and managing change. This article is about that developers of an electric power plant in northeastern South Dakota demised the project, saying they were not able to employ other investors after one of the principal utility supporters pulled out. Thus, North Dakota and South Dakota now are likely to mislay up to 1,000 megawatts of electric transmission capacity that could be used to develop the wind power industry in states.

According to this article, the plant, planned for construction next to an existing power station, was meant to supply about 550 megawatts of power to utilities. To do that it needed necessary permits from state regulators to begin building, but financing the plant’s construction proved to be too difficult.

The project included construction of new and upgraded high-voltage power lines in southern Minnesota that could carry power from new wind-powered generators.

We could learn about managing project from the class, and now we applied in real situation. It is so complicated that it is related a lot of people’s profit and loss. Even though discarding project, maybe environmental group like this demise of project.  Because coal-fueled power station went against national trends favoring wind power and other renewable energy sources

This chapter provides an overview of how organizations build information systems. As I study business, I need to know information systems are the underlying foundation of how companies operate.  Also, I can consider about my project in my life. It is very helpful to set and mediate my short and long term projects.

IS 130-13. Chapter 10.Enterprise resource planning and collaboration systems.
Nov 5th, 2009 by junkilee

This article is about the enterprise resource planning company. There is a one company, Satyam and it is rippling through the technology services industry, as customers mess up to line up other suppliers and rivals look to pick up business.

Already, competitors are trying for a divide up of Satyam’s nearly $2 billion in annual revenue. The big winners from the fight are likely to be two American companies, Accenture and I.B.M., Rod Bourgeois, a technology services specialist. Satyam was very powerful at enterprise resource planning. For corporate customers, the crucial resource is the software developers at Satyam, far more than the corporate entity itself. Satyam’s the most powerful business is maintaining and customizing so-called enterprise resource planning software, typically from SAP and Oracle, which runs the basic operations at companies.

Each company already supplies most of the blue-chip corporate clients of Satyam. I.B.M. and Accenture have built up their operations in recent years, so they offer Satyam customers the same skills at competitive prices.

We already learned that enterprise resource planning is very important and it is necessary to manage the business well. I think enterprise resource planning helps capitalize upon the power of information by providing mechanisms for improved information access, sharing, and application. This includes access and use of structured information found in transactional database and data warehouses, instructed information found in textual documents and email messages, and information that organizational employees possess. To do that, companies try to integrate intra network and extra network without problem and then, using corporate data, they can manage smoothly.

IS 130-13 chapter 9. CRM and Business inteligence

In this article, it explains social networking company was targeting a much bigger advertising market that the search ad market that has made Google rich.
Also spokesperson of Facebook told a group of high-tech specialists that revenues were growing so fast at privately held Facebook that it turned cash positive recently, instead of in 2010 as predicted earlier this year.
A member of the board told that the company was on target to bring in revenue of $500 million this year. She, who has long fought the perception Facebook lacked a revenue model, laid out a game plan to turn the company into a cash machine by describing how the company aimed to bring in revenues from novel ads aimed at its 300 million users.
According to this article Google does a better job than any other company in advertising to people who are at the bottom of the funnel and know what they want, and are searching to buy it, it said hours after Google reported third quarter net revenue of $4.38 billion, beating analysts’ expectations.
Now, social networking company is getting more important. Lots of people, even the old, use social networking through internet and it took a crucial position in our lives. Because people stay in these social networking, companies also want to get in this system. It is more powerful methods to advertise and make easy to contact traditional customer, so they can check their reviews and complains. Definitely, it could appeal to potential customers. I think that the more information system is developed, the more these kinds of social network marketing are important.

IS 130. Chapter 8. operations management and supply chain management
Nov 5th, 2009 by junkilee

This chapter is about operation management and supply chain management that are important in business and information technology. In this article, it explains and represents global supply chain, based on china. China is the biggest country and has huge population, so it takes a significant role in global supply chain. Thus, it affects supply chain a lot and it is affected by global situation.
When it happen global situation, china’s supply chain becomes bad and terrible, that this article explains well. According to the article, China’s hopes for a immediate export recovery from the global crisis could be destabilized by the weakest links in its powerful supply chain – smaller companies too damaged by the downturn and credit crisis to get goods to market. As collapsing sales to recession-hit Western markets consider on China’s economy, bankruptcies pose a growing risk to its export machine, threatening everyone from suppliers of crucial parts and materials to companies that transport finished products. Struggling Chinese exporters are facing higher costs and need to keep closer checks on suppliers, and a shrinking pool of financially healthy companies to deal with is limiting their vaunted flexibility, slowing down delivery times. Also, one of represent of supplier said they tried to find an alternative source that could offer the same quality and delivery.
We could learn about the supply chain that consists of all parties involved, directly or indirectly, in the procurement of a product or raw material. It includes supplier, manufacturer, distributor, retailer, and customer. They are all important to do supply chain management well. I think one of the participants has suffered from some problems and it effects the others, so we need to care about this point.

IS-130 Chapter7. Network, Telecommunications. and mobile technology
Nov 5th, 2009 by junkilee

This article’s subject is that AT&T Allows Internet Voice Calls on Apple’s iPhone. According to this article, it expresses that AT&T will open its third-generation wireless network to third-party Internet voice applications on iPhone, clearing the way for services such as Skype. Also, Apple praised AT&T’s action and said it would move rapidly to make voice over Internet protocol apps available on the iPhone.
One of the Skype director said that AT&T’s move the right direction and it is very good, but also, to maintain open Internet, administration procedures are also needed.
Apple spokeswoman expresses that they are so happy that AT&T is now supporting VoIP applications and they will be revising our developers’ agreement to get VoIP on the apple store and in customers’ hand as soon as possible.
First, we need to know what VoIP is, and it is voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP uses TCP/IP technology to send out voice calls over long-distance telephone lines.
Developing of telecommunication is very needed and useful for us. Between telecommunication companies, they amalgamate their software of technologies each other and it help technology to develop more. As we already know, a lot of people in the world use the Skype or iPod. I also use the Skype to call my family or my friends frequently, because I live apart from them now. Of course, as telecommunication technologies are developed, we can use this freely, but I sometimes feel very inconvenient when I use the Skype, because I must have the computer to call them. When I am outside or without the computer, I cannot call, especially abroad. Thus, I thought if I use to this service through my cellular, it is really good. Thus, I am very glad that I see this article.

IS-130 Chapter6. Databases and data warehouses.
Nov 5th, 2009 by junkilee

This article is a good example of misusing of databases. It is about the health insurance in America, and it cause patients to cost a lot to cover their insurance. Comparing to the other countries, medical insurance of America is privatized, so it is more effective, but curing illness is also very expensive. On the other hand, in Korea, my home country, medical insurance is nationalized, so the cost is not too high, but it cause a lot of other problems, like inefficiency. This article represents that Ingenix, one of subsidiary of the health insurer United Health group, make doctors to underpay, and drive to increase expenses for patients deliberately. During more than ten years, United Health center gives in the data involved in 100 million American to Ingenix and allows determining the detail cost for caring health. Using this advantage, Ingenix manipulated the data and deceived people to undervalue the medical care costs, making patients burdening to pay more money. The company did not need to pay back proper money, because it is based on wrong databases. In information systems class, we could learn how to use databases and how process data warehouse is. First, it collects a lot of data and classifies the data categories. Next, these information categories integrate each other, and are used in appropriate situations. In Ingenix case, they manipulated databases, so it caused 100 million people to suffer from paying more money. From this view, using a right database is very important to manage something. All companies, even small stores, use the database to sell their products, administer customers’ information, and manage their own work well. I think it is very crucial to use appropriate databases and operate nicely.

IS-130 Chapter 5. ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURES
Nov 5th, 2009 by junkilee

In information system, data is so important that even we can be disappeared in Earth, if all data about us is erased. Sometimes, this true is used by movie story or material of book. People use bank to save, transfer, or lend money and government accumulate the data of their citizen, not to mention the other companies or finance system, so data can change everything in the world. As it became so critical and crucial, dangerous of losing data is also becoming serious. In chapter 5, we learned about disaster recovery that is included in enterprise architecture. According to this article, making a recovery plan could save money or even entire your business and there are a lot of methods of data recovery and article explains that the most common data disaster is data loss that can be caused by human error, hardware spool, calamity, and hacking. Not only making disaster recovery, but also preventing or reducing to leak data is very important, so there are some guides to do that. These guides are intended to simplify the disaster-recovery planning process by breaking the overall task into building blocks, covering major areas like data, communication and people.
We need to learn this important information, and also we can apply our situation in our laptop or anything else. Nowadays, most companies also are preparing disaster recovery, but the point is to reduce the cost of disaster recovery, because it can sometimes burden of entrepreneur. Thus, we need appropriate strategies to prevent our important information.

IS130- Chapter4. Ethics and information security
Nov 5th, 2009 by junkilee
As we use computer and internet every day, we sometimes suffer from infringing our information, fraud, getting virus, being hacked or spam e-mail. Also I use internet a lot, from reading newspaper to using online banking, not to mention of using e-mail. In this article, it represents that one of the filtering spam mail companies takedown cut global spam traffic by about 70 percent last year, but this year, average spam volumes have increased gradually. Because spammers try to rebuild technology, using more technically advanced tools. Also, it warns that negligent users are easy to click the spam mail. After that, their computers could be infected with viruses. I use e-mail since I was middle school student. E-mail is very useful and easy to send and receive, no matter how far. I am used to send e-mail to Chinese friend and at first time I liked it and thought using e-mail is very convenience. However, I felt sick of spam mail. There became hundreds of spam mails and I hated to receive them. Although there are still lots of spam mails today, powerful filtering of spam becomes, so we can use email without annoying.
It costs a lot of money to send and prevent unsolicited emails and according to some statistics; it was over 14 billion dollars. Actually, spammers violate email privacy policy and anti-spam policy.
I hope that people do not suffer from unsolicited emails anymore and we need to be cautious of spam, because it could be change to virus.

IS-130 Chapter 3. Ebusiness
Nov 5th, 2009 by junkilee

Google, the most famous searching engine, starts to infuse its paid search advertising with video, images and other features. In this article, it represents that Google tries to advertise with progressive and effective techniques.

When it comes to search, Google is the most powerful to search and learn something you want to get. Even though, some people may argue that we let Google know about us too much, nobody can deny Google is very useful and needed to live better. We can get everything from this site, from service and education to the map.
Indeed, Google is one of the best examples of ebusiness, because it is nothing without internet. However, Google become huge company that even can control the world, as internet developed rapidly. Lots of other companies want their company-sites to put a high rank, when people search the word related with their companies or products. It is one method to advertise, and Google connect with cell phone to give the information. In other words, people can use to get information easily when moving or without computer. Thus, the article reports that Google puts to use this point, so it could promote more powerful the other companies.

In my country, most people use Naver that is the most famous search-engine in Korea. It is very useful to get knowledge and information. Moreover, we can watch the news and TV, know the weather, use the dictionary, and so on. As people use portal sites many times, they become very good tools of promotion.

IS-130 Chapter 2. Strategic Decision Making
Nov 5th, 2009 by junkilee
Toyota, one of the most famous automobile companies, has decided to have to cut so many jobs that many people have in automobile industry. Because Toyota makes a decision to close the plant in Fremont, CA. In according to California officials, approximately 40000 jobs could be lost due to closing Toyota plant.
In this article, it depicts how Toyota makes a market in U.S. about coalition between GM and Toyota. However, GM suffered from global crisis, problem of money, and filing about bankruptcy, so GM had to pull out Toyota. Definitely, it made Toyota decide to close the plant.
It is about forty thousand jobs, employee and their family, but Toyota has to make a decision. As it cannot maintain its plant without General Motors considering long terms.

Likewise, sometimes business managers have to do very big decision. Even it is about their reputation, notorious and others life, they do not have a choice because of preventing more bad situation. Plant lockout in the midst of a global crisis and economic breakdown is business making decision and and it is also a political decision.

If I were a big conglomerate’s manager, I have to make a very big decision frequently. Sometimes it could be related with other countries benefit, or our employees’ job. At that time, how do I do? I thought about that. In these cases, the result is very crucial and cardinal, so managers try to reduce mistakes and errors. Thus, correct making decision is really necessity and indispensability, in light of these things.

IS 130 CHAPTER1. IS in business
Nov 5th, 2009 by junkilee

Samsung, most famous company in Korea, is well known of electronic product, not only in Asia but around world. I saw a lot of Samsung’s products since I was young. When I was young, Samsung was a good company, but it was not multinational company. At that time, there were many other competitive, like Daewoo, gold-star that it was changed name of LG. I think that Samsung perfectly utilized information systems. They knew circumstances and moved fast, so it made nowadays Samsung global entrepreneur.

In this article, it represents that Samsung invests huge money at eco friendly technology. they devoted lots of money, time and efforts to energy-saving technologies. These days, energy efficiency and eco friendly product is really getting important, and it will become more seriously. Therefore, It is very good examples of using business information.

Also, I thought about five forces model on Samsung cell-phone company. I thought buyer power is strong and supplier power is not high. Because there are lots of cell phone company. Threads of substitute products are not good, because like from pager to cell phone there are a lot of chances of new product. Threat of new entrants is very low, because it needs to a lot of investments technology, communication, and so on. Last, rivalries among existing competitors are very high. Among the cell companies, competition is really high.

Samsung used information systems well and moved fast, so it survived and could grew to be a global company. On the other hand, Daewoo which was Samsung’s rival did not think information system, and just concentrated to expand the business. As result of that, it was almost ruined.
